Mar 27, 2006
1. Announcement:
DEVELOPER ANNOUNCES COMPETITION FOR PUBLIC ART AT
CORNHILL LANDING IN DOWNTOWN ROCHESTER, NY
$65,000 will be awarded for a public sculpture which
will be the centerpiece of the amphitheater along
the Genesee River at Corn Hill Landing. In an
announcement at the site on Plymouth Avenue at the
terminus of Plymouth Avenue, Anthony DiMarzo,
President of Mark IV Construction Co. announced the
public competition, which will be open to sculptors,
artists, or metal workers in the Western New York
area.
With a matching grant from the New York State
Department of State, the developer of the recently
completed 127 unit mixed-use rental apartment
complex on the Genesee River in downtown Rochester,
will manage a public competition for this major
outdoor artwork for the City of Rochester.
DiMarzo thanked the staff of the City Economic
Development Department who successfully negotiated
the matching grant for public art as part of the
Corn Hill Landing development process
The amphitheater is currently under construction
adjacent to the River Walk, and will be a short walk
to the Ice Cream Shop, Bakery and Coffee Shop,
restaurants and convenience shops nearing completion
on the ground floor of the apartment complex. The
location is in the heart of the historic Corn Hill
neighborhood adjacent to downtown. The Mary Jemison
Canal Boat will
dock here. With outstanding views of the downtown
skyline and located
along the popular walking and jogging trail along
the River from downtown to the U of R, the
amphitheater will be a popular site of outdoor
concerts and performance events, said DiMarzo.
Artists wishing to complete should plan on attending
one of two Public Information Meetings at the site:
Tuesday, May 9 at 6:30 pm or Saturday, May 13th at
2:00 pm.
Competition rules and details are available on the
Mark IV Website at
www.MarkIVEnterprises.com. A jury of community
leaders and artists will
select six finalists, each of whom will receive a
stipend of $500. The selected designer will be
expected to work with our engineers to prepare
detailed construction documents and specifications,
and will receive fees for the design and
construction of $65,000, which is in addition to
related costs for engineering design and
inspections, foundations, etc.

engineering certification of quality assurance
during fabrication.

Avenue Plaza
which includes a raised platform labeled "Plaza
Focal Point"

meeting's with the jury for further evaluation of
the design in relation to each of the judgment
criteria enumerated above. The finalist may be
required to submit additional drawings or samples,

The selected artist will enter into a contract with
Mark IV which will require
that the fabrication be undertaken at a place with
suitable liability insurance, and that a Living Wage
be paid to any employees. A Fee of $5,000 shall be
paid upon contract signing.
Up to $10,000 has been budgeted by Mark IV for
